NURISTAN Handcarved Photo Frame - 5R
An intricately carved frame featuring traditional Nuristani patterns.
Nuristan, ‘the land of light’ is a region in northeast Afghanistan, deep in the valleys of the Hindu Kush. Isolated from central authority in steep woodlands, and away from the trans-continental trade routes to the north and south, the area preserved pre-Islamic cultures until the late 19th century.
In an area very rich in wood, the people of Nuristan built elaborate shrines and temples of wood, and carved ancestral figures and social symbols which stood in such structures. Till today, Nuristani woodcarvers still make work using the deep cut ridges and angles in geometric and vegetal patterns.
Materials: Walnut wood from Kunar, Afghanistan.
Dimensions: 17.5 x 13 x 1.5cm - fits a standard 5R photo (5” x 7”).
Due to the nature of natural wood, the pattern, colour and details of each piece is different. As they are individually made by hand, there may be some variations in shape and size. No two pieces are exactly the same.
Solid wood may expand and shrink with differences in temperature and humidity. Take care not to place your frame next to radiators or anywhere subject to excessive changes in temperature or moisture content.
To clean the frame, simply wipe down with a soft, lightly damp cloth to remove any dust. In the case of stubborn marks, a solution of mild detergent such as washing liquid may be used on the cloth. Avoid the use of bleaches.
